Breast Reduction
Conveniently located to serve Tallahassee

Dr. Alfredo Paredes of Tallahassee Plastic Surgery Clinic is known by his patients as the best Tallahassee breast reduction surgeon. Large, heavy breasts can cause women to have both physical and emotional problems. In addition to self-image issues, you may also experience physical pain and discomfort. Breast surgery can offer relief, and your surgeon can help you decide which procedure is best for you based on your health, age, size, and the shape of your breasts. With regards to body weight, a well-maintained, healthy body weight is recommended at the time of the surgery, as any weight gain could cause your breasts to increase in size after the procedure as well.

Medical Need for a Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery changes the size, weight, firmness, and shape of the breasts. This procedure is often chosen by women who experience physical limitations due to having large, heavy breasts. Physical activity is often painful or uncomfortable for women who have overly large breasts. Along with that, the constant pull of heavy breasts may result in painful indentations on the shoulders from bra straps, as well as long-term back pain. For these reasons and more, many women decide to have breast reduction surgery.

Am I an Ideal Candidate for a Breast Reduction?

Healthy women may consider a breast reduction if they wish to feel more comfortable, reduce limitations, and alter their appearance. If your breasts are causing severe psychological distress, affecting your physical health, or hindering your ability to exercise, then a breast reduction may be a fitting solution for you. Along with that, if you experience back, neck, and shoulder pain as a result of having large breasts, these aches can turn into long-term health issues if not taken care of, in which case a breast reduction procedure should be considered.

Along with the physical hindrances of large breasts, women who feel aesthetically unbalanced with regards to overly large breasts may also consider a breast reduction. Those who feel top heavy in a way that negatively affects self-confidence, as well as those who feel that the size of their breasts does not match the rest of their body, may consider the procedure.

Rashes and excessive sweating, infections under the breasts, sores or deep grooves on shoulders from bra straps, skin issues, psychological distress, difficulty finding clothes that fit properly, and inability to participate in physical activities are also common grounds for considering a breast reduction.

Your Consultation

During your consultation at our Tallahassee Plastic Surgery Clinic, a physical examination of your breasts will be performed. Communicate your concerns and desired results so that a customized treatment plan can be formulated to address your specific issues.

There will also be a review of your medical history. You will be asked about your underlying conditions, past surgeries, any allergies, and current medications.

Photographs may also be taken for purposes of comparison. Pre-operative instructions will be given as well. Additional laboratory tests may be ordered to ensure your safety and well-being.

Logistics of the Surgery

In some cases, excess fat may be removed through liposuction in conjunction with the excision. If breast size is largely due to fatty tissue and excess skin is not a factor, liposuction alone may be used for breast reduction. The surgical techniques used to perform a breast reduction surgery include lifting the breast into a normal position and reducing the size of the areola to match the reduced breast size. Surgical treatment plans are individualized for each patient’s unique anatomic findings, as well as for their personal aesthetic goals.

Several types of incision patterns are available for breast reduction procedures, and the right pattern for you will be discussed during your consultation.

A donut incision involves two concentric circles around the areola, while a lollipop incision involves a circle around the areola and a vertical incision down to the breast fold. An anchor incision is used to remove the largest amount of tissue, and it consists of a lollipop incision with a curving line across the breast fold.

Surgical Technique

Also known as reduction mammaplasty, breast reduction is a procedure offered at our center. Breast reductions are performed to remove excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts.

Patients may also choose to add liposuction as well as a breast lift surgery to the breast reduction procedure for optimal results depending on their post-op goals.

Pre- and Post-Op Care

At our Tallahassee Plastic Surgery Clinic, breast reductions are usually performed through incisions on the breasts for the surgical removal of the excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin.

Immediately following the operation, gauze is placed over the incisions, and the breasts are supported with a surgical bra, which should be worn for 24 hours a day to help reduce swelling and support the breasts as they heal. If needed, a small tube will be inserted into each breast to assist with drainage of blood and fluid a few days following the procedure. The stitches usually dissolve and are generally placed on the inside of the skin. You may want to set aside several weeks after your breast reduction surgery for recovery. Most women who undergo breast reduction surgery experience a bit of breast pain for the first few days post-op. From there, mild discomfort continues for a week or longer during the healing process, with medicine to aid in relief. Swelling and bruising may last for up to several weeks. Most patients take off one week from work, varying with the type of work.

The results of your breast reduction surgery are immediately visible. Over time, post-surgical swelling will reduce and incision lines will fade during your recovery. Your satisfaction with your new image will hopefully continue to grow as you recover from your breast surgery. Cost of Breast Reduction Surgery

The cost of breast reduction surgery depends on the extent of the procedure and the exact techniques utilized by the surgeon. The overall price includes anesthetic and surgical fees incurred.

Financing and Insurance Coverage

When it comes to financing a breast reduction surgery, some insurance companies cover a portion of the costs, and others will cover the entire cost if it is being done to relieve skin problems, back pain, or any other medical conditions that are directly caused or related to having large or heavy breasts. Insurance companies generally do not cover the operation if it is being done only to change the appearance of the breasts, as that is not a medically necessary reason for the procedure.

As an experienced Tallahassee Breast Reduction surgeon, Dr. Alfredo Paredes of Tallahassee Plastic Surgery Clinic will meet with you in his Tallahassee office to discuss all options and pricing. The price of breast reduction surgery is impacted by a number of specific factors. Breast reduction cost determinants include techniques employed and time required to perform the procedure. Other procedures that can be done at the same time can also alter the price, these include areola reduction or breast reduction and lift surgery.
