How Are They Different?

A tummy tuck removes e xcess skin from the lower abdomen, which tightens the skin in the upper section. The result is a smooth, flat stomach area that allows natural abs to show through. On the other hand, liposuction uses a small tube to get under the skin and vacuum out problems areas of fat. The removal of these pockets of fat makes it easier to maintain an ideal body weight after the surgery.

What’s Right for You?

There is a common thought that tummy tucks are mainly for mothers who, after giving birth, want to tighten up their midsections. This is certainly an effective use of the procedure, but the tummy tuck also strengthens the inner girdle and surrounding muscles. Furthermore, anyone who has lost a significant amount of weight and wants to get rid of excess skin would be a great candidate for a tummy tuck.

Liposuction  is a better fit for those who, despite their best efforts at diet and exercise, can’t get rid of certain pockets of fat. Similarly, they may want a little boost in their quest to get rid of stubborn fat. Liposuction is most effective for removing small amounts of fat and is not ideal for significant weight reduction.

What Should You Expect?

A complete medical history will be collected, as we take our patient safety very seriously. Post-surgery recovery and external marks should be considered too. A tummy tuck will often leave some scarring, albeit below the waistline and out of sight. While liposuction is a more discreet procedure that leaves less scarring, it can still result in swelling, bruising, and temporary numbness.

Either way, plan on taking a few days off work for recovery, and a tummy tuck might demand a couple of weeks off work. Full recovery and reduction of swelling may take several weeks.
