What You Might Not Know About Breast Reduction Surgery

Although augmentation is the more common practice, there are many reasons women decide to have breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty). Because the procedure removes some of the tissue and skin from the area to reduce and reshape the breasts, it also makes them a lot lighter. This can be a godsend for women with chronic neck and back pain as a result of carrying around significant weight on their chests all their lives. Some patients also prefer the look of smaller breasts; especially those who feel their breasts are out of proportion to the rest of their body. Still, others opt for reduction mammoplasty because their breasts prevent or limit their participation in sports and other physical activities.

The Risks

As with any operation, there are some risks associated with breast reduction surgery. The most common of them include:

-Scars: Because large incisions must be made to remove excess tissue and fat, reduction mammoplasty usually leaves visible scars. The visibility of the scars varies from patient to patient.

-Uneven nipple position: Because the nipples may be removed and reattached, they may be slightly uneven after surgery.

-Loss of sensation in the breasts and/or nipples: Although this common side effect is almost always temporary, it may last for a few months.

The Rewards

The overwhelming majority of patients who have breast reduction surgery are completely satisfied with the results. Because it can be tailored to each woman’s specific needs, the reduction can make the breasts smaller, lighter, firmer, and more evenly proportioned.

Other Considerations

If you are thinking about breast reduction surgery for pain relief, you should know that many insurance providers cover some or all of the costs of the procedure, as long as you can prove that reducing the size is medically necessary. However, if you are having the surgery for purely aesthetic reasons, be aware that insurance will not pay for your operation.

Breast reduction surgery helps countless women alleviate the pain and discomfort caused by large breasts. It may also help them boost their confidence and self-esteem.

Dr. Rawlings is truly AMAZING! I've had the pleasure of being under his care for several procedures. He is like family to my family. Fifteen years later (I now commute 3 hours from the largest city in Florida), I am still trusting him with all of my cosmetic needs/adjustments. He is very caring, professional and precise!!!!! I love Dr. Rawlings ❤️
