Sclerotherapy for Leg Spider Veins

Tallahassee, Panama City, Destin and Valdosta plastic surgery includes spider vein treatment. If you are troubled by the unsightly spider veins on your legs, you can have a procedure called sclerotherapy. This cosmetic procedure reduces or eliminates surface vessels or spider veins, commonly on the face and legs. Under the care of our Physician Assistant, veins are injected with a sclerosing saline solution, which causes them to collapse and fade from view. Results are usually apparent in two to five weeks. The procedure is performed in the office with no anesthesia necessary. Treatment includes a consultation with the doctor. Most treatments can be completed in one session, but additional sessions may be required for optimal results.

Ideal Candidates

Adults between 30 and 60 who are bothered by their spider veins are suitable candidates for spider vein treatment. They should have realistic expectations of the procedure’s results, have not been pregnant or nursing in the past three months, and can follow pre- and post-procedure instructions.

However, those with a history of clotting disorders, keloid scarring, or light-triggered seizures are not considered good candidates for sclerotherapy. Bedridden people cannot get this treatment because regular walking is part of the post-surgery recovery process.

Your Spider Vein Treatment Consultation

During your appointment, you will be asked about the symptoms of your spider veins, when you noticed them, whether you feel pain, and what relieves or worsens your symptoms. You will be asked about your medical history, including current medications and supplements.

We will determine if you are a good candidate for spider vein treatment. We will also give you pre- and post-surgery instructions to help with your preparation and recovery. If you have any questions, we will do our best to answer them to help you make a well-informed decision.

What Is Spider Vein Treatment Like?

Our spider vein treatment is a minimally invasive procedure. A chemical solution will be injected into your spider vein to close it. The problematic vein will likely disappear in three to six weeks. Depending on the severity of the problem, the same vein might need more than one injection.

The liquid irritates the vein’s lining, making it swell until blood flow stops. You may feel cramping or stinging as the needle is injected into the vein.

What Is Aftercare Like?

It will be best to have someone drive you home after the treatment. Once you arrive home, you are encouraged to be mobile, since it helps to move and walk around to prevent clots from forming. You will be asked to wear bandages or compression stockings for about two weeks to relieve pressure on the injected veins. Avoid applying lotion or shaving your legs until the target site heals.

Most patients resume regular activities after the treatment. You may be advised to avoid strenuous workouts for two weeks. Avoid sun exposure for the same period as well, and apply at least 30 SPF sunscreen to prevent dark spots from forming on your skin.

You may notice improvements in your smaller spider veins within three to six weeks after the treatment. It might take three to four months for results to be visible for larger veins.

The Cost of Spider Vein Treatment

The cost of getting spider vein treatment depends on the severity of your condition and how many sessions you need to get the desired results. The price of the procedure also includes anesthesia fees, surgeon’s fees, post-treatment garments, and other related expenses.
