What to Expect from a Male Breast Reduction Procedure

Tallahassee Plastic Surgery Clinic - Male Breast ReductionGynecomastia is a swelling of breast tissue in men and boys, usually due to hormone imbalances or the use of certain medications. Symptoms can present at any age, and it is estimated that about 50% of males in the United States will experience the condition at some point in their lifetime. While the condition is benign, it can cause some men to feel self-conscious about their appearance. Weight loss can help improve the appearance of enlarged breasts in men, but since many men with the condition also have excess glandular tissue, even very lean men may experience enlarged breasts.

The Male Breast Reduction Procedure

Male breast reduction is a common procedure used to treat gynecomastia. The procedure is relatively short, and it can be performed using local anesthesia and sedation or general anesthesia in an out-patient setting. For the procedure, two small incisions are made on either side of the chest. Through these incisions, the surgeon removes excess glandular tissue and fat to restore a flatter, firmer chest.

Recovery and Maintenance

The recovery period for male breast reduction is relatively quick and tolerable, and many can return to work or school after a few days. The treatment site may be sore for several days after the procedure, and over-the-counter analgesics or prescription pain medications may be taken as directed by the surgeon. Patients should avoid vigorous exercise for 3 weeks after surgery.

Some patients may experience a temporary loss of sensation at the treatment site directly after surgery. Sensation should return gradually within a few months after the male breast reduction procedure. In order to maintain the results, patients should practice a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and regular exercise. Significant weight gain, steroid use, or other medications that affect hormone levels could cause a return of the condition.
