Ear Pinning Plastic Surgery: An Overview of the Basics

Of the facial features, ears are unique in that like the nose, ears are nearly impossible to conceal. Hats, hair, and headbands can hide protruding ears, but only temporarily. For ears that look out of proportion and/or position, ear pinning plastic surgery may be the perfect, permanent solution.

Ear pinning plastic surgery can successfully correct:

– protruding ears on one or both sides not associated with hearing loss
– macrotia, a rare congenital condition that causes overly large ears
– dissatisfactory results from previous otoplasty

During an ear pinning procedure, the surgeon makes an incision behind the ear to expose the cartilage. Then, depending on the surgical objective, the surgeon scores, reshapes, adds, removes and/or repositions the cartilage and skin as necessary to achieve the most natural-looking ear possible. In some cases, doctors use non-invasive staples and sutures to pull the ears closer to the head.

Ear pinning procedures generally last about two hours (sometimes a bit longer). Adults typically undergo an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with a sedative. Children are sometimes hospitalized overnight.

Patients should inform work, school and any other obligations, and plan for a post-operative recovery period of three to five days. After that, a protective headband is worn for six to eight weeks while sleeping to safeguard against accidental trauma while the ears finish healing.

Of course, any form of plastic surgery is a serious decision. Good ear pinning plastic surgery candidates include healthy adults and children over five years of age who don’t have serious conditions that can impact surgery or recovery, as well as those who don’t suffer from untreated chronic ear infections or body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Adult non-smokers who have clear, realistic goals for ear pinning and generally positive personalities make the best surgery candidates. Consider all these factors first to determine if ear pinning seems right for you.
