Getting Your Nose Back to the Grindstone

Wondering what to expect during rhinoplasty recovery & downtime? Symptoms vary for each patient, but there are general precautions one can take to avoid complications.

Expect some bruising and swelling as a normal symptom. The amount and degree will depend on a few factors: the type of surgery performed (open or closed), whether or not the nasal bones were broken for the procedure, and patient-specific details including age, thickness of the skin and bleeding tendency. To reduce the extent of these symptoms, avoid any blood-thinning medications for up to two weeks before your procedure. Remedies and supplements containing strong doses of Ginkgo, vitamin E and Ginseng should also be avoided. If you’re a smoker, ditch the habit until fully recovered.

You’ll probably be eager to get back to your daily routine, but ensuring the best possible outcome will take time and patience. During the first 7-10 days your face will be the most sensitive and at risk. Avoid any physical activities that could cause unnecessary stress. For example: strenuous exercise or weight lifting, blowing your nose or attempting to clear your sinuses. You can expect a return to your normal schedule after 2-3 weeks, depending on the severity of your symptoms.

During your rhinoplasty recovery & downtime you’ll want to generally take it easy, despite maybe feeling back to normal. In order to avoid any complications, relax and try to enjoy the healing period.
